Black greyhounds make great pets!

Did you know that roughly 70% of greyhounds are black?  Did you also know that black dogs wait longer to find their forever home than any other coloured dog?  We estimate that the black hounds we rescue stay in kennels 30% longer than their lighter-coloured canine friends.

Why are there so many black greyhounds?  Well, over the years the famous Irish champion racing greyhound Top Honcho sired over 10,000 puppies.  Top Honcho was black, and black is the predominant gene.  Many of his black off-spring were champions too and were selected for further breeding.

Myths and stories, and an association with guard dogs, make black dogs less popular than other coloured dogs.  However, when it comes to making a great pet, colour is irrelevant and black greyhounds and lurchers are just as wonderful as any other colour.
