Say hello to the beautiful Sweetpea (otherwise known as Sweeters Poteeters)! This big softie is as sweet as her name suggests, and has quickly won the hearts of all our staff at the Devon Centre.

Sweeters is an 8 year old bull lurcher girl who deserves to be spoiled in her forever home. She’s a real people person and gives an impressive full body wag when greeting her human friends (even if you’ve only been gone for a few minutes!). She thrives on fuss and attention, so would prefer not to be left alone too often – though short periods should be fine with a gradual build-up. Sweetpea is a big girl who doesn’t realize her own size! She loves a cuddle and will try to fit into your lap. She can be very bouncy (especially when feeling anxious and seeking reassurance from her handler) and can be worried about certain types of handling although she is very tolerant. For this reason we are looking for a home with teenagers or adults only.

Sweetpea has started making doggie friends since coming into our care, and seems to really enjoy canine company. She is keen to greet dogs large and small, though some can be put off by her bouncy nature. Sensitive Sweetpea can become very anxious if another dog tells her off or is reactive towards her, so would prefer to walk in areas without too many other dogs for now. Although she has always lived as the only dog, Sweetpea may be able to share her home with another dog in the future – for health reasons, we are currently looking for a home where she will be the only dog.

Poor Sweetpea has very sensitive skin due to a suspected food allergy. We are not yet sure what Sweetpea is allergic to, so this will need investigating and managing in the home, probably with a specific diet. The kennel environment is not ideal for a dog with allergy issues, and she’s hurt the tip of her tail by wagging it so hard inside the kennel, so we are keen to find Sweetpea her forever sofa as soon as we can!

Sweetpea has lived in a home previously and is reported to have been housetrained and settled within the home environment. She hasn’t had a lot of exercise recently, so this will need to be built up gradually again in her new home. Despite her slightly older age, Sweetpea is still a keen walker (though she’s not so keen on car travel!). She is strong on the lead when excited or unsure, so will need an adopter who is physically able to manage her on walks.

Sweetpea is an absolute sweetheart who will make a fantastic companion. We have had comments about her not being very pretty, but we think she’s gorgeous! Although she hasn’t been with us for long, we’re all worried that Sweeters will be overlooked in favour of younger and more conventionally attractive dogs – but what could be more appealing than those snaggle teefs and that ear which always goes in the wrong direction?! If you think you’re the right person to appreciate her inner (and outer!) beauty, why not apply to adopt Sweetpea?
