Adorable Hughie is an 18-month-old deerhound-X, who was bred as a working lurcher, but ‘failed’, and now has his gorgeous amber eyes set on life as a companion.  When he arrived with us, he was very worried, having led a restricted life without much positive input. Despite his difficult start, Hughie has settled in and responded really well to the routine at kennels. Although he is sensitive boy, he has started to grow in confidence and we’re seeing his playful puppyish personality begin to shine through. 

Hughie has been social with everyone he has met so far and is often keen to say hello. He is a big boy, and likes to greet people at head height! He will also try to get into your lap, given half a chance. This need to be close to people is likely due to anxiety about life, and should become less intense as he settles and develops trust in his adoptive family. His new people will have to be sensitive to his need for reassurance, and ensure he only has positive experiences at home and while out walking. He could live with children over the age of 11 who are robust enough to withstand his enthusiasm.

Hughie has met a number of dogs while in kennels, and although like any young boy, he needs to work on his social skills, his intentions are always friendly. He could potentially live with another well-adjusted dog, pending appropriate introductions, and we expect that he will be able to have plenty of dog walking friends, once settled. 

Because of his anxiety, Hughie may struggle with being left alone at home, so would like a family where people are around most of the time and where separation can be gradually built up. He will need a quiet suburban or rural home, and quiet walks initially, as he may find busy environments with lots of noise and off-lead dogs difficult to cope with.

Given a chance by a family with experience of positive training, and the time and patience to help him come out of his shell, this enormous, irresistible, hairy lapdog will blossom into a loving companion, devoted to his family and confident enough to face the world by their sides.
