Queen Ada is a regal six year old greyhound lady who is currently running things at our Devon Centre, but would really love to be the ruler of her own forever sofa! Ada loves people, is affectionate and outgoing. She travels well in the van and is very clean inside her kennel, so will hopefully pick up on house training fairly easily (though she does tend to scent mark initially in a new place). Although she is older than many of our ex-racers, she still has plenty of energy!
When it comes to other dogs, One tends to prefer One’s own space! Ada does enjoy social walks with our other hounds at the Centre, but needs her personal space bubble and will react defensively if they get too close. She ignores other hounds for the most part but likes them to behave sensibly when walking with her, and will tell them off if they get too excited! Ada has shown some predatory behaviour towards smaller dog breeds. This is improving with help from our staff and volunteer small dogs, but she will need ongoing care around other breeds in public (and will likely need to stay on-lead and muzzled for walks on an ongoing basis). She would not cope with walks in a park, busy beach or other areas with dogs running off-lead since she finds this very frustrating.
Ada walks beautifully on-lead most of the time, but can be strong if she does become upset or frustrated by another dog. Although she loves her food, Ada has shown no issues around food, toys or her bed with people. However, as the Queen of Kennels she doesn’t like to share these things with her canine subjects – for this reason she will need to be the only pet at home. Like most ex-racers, Ada hasn’t lived in a home before and will need time to adjust. She is very chilled in her kennel so will likely be a couch potato inside the home once she finds her feet.
Ada has been with us for some time now and is often overlooked in favour of our younger, more colourful hounds. We’d really love to see her giving her Christmas day speech from a warm and cosy home this year – so if you’ve got what it takes to give a very special dog the royal treatment she so obviously deserves, please ask about Queen Ada!
